What is a Shortcut Virus?
There’s no wiki definition as such; but, as the name suggests, a shortcut virus is a virus (a malware) that hides your original files inside shortcuts.
The way it hides the file remains unknown though the effect is quite visible. The original files are there on the drive itself, but in such a position that you can’t recognise it nor take it out (in the advanced stage).
Initially, it doesn’t harm your files but later on, it may make them corrupt or even delete all the files; depends on the type of shortcut virus.
Therefore, removing the shortcut virus is essential for getting your files back.
Fact
As long as the virus stays or connects to new devices, it starts multiplying itself and spreads across every connected device!
From where did the Shortcut Virus came?
Have you ever wondered from where did the shortcut virus land up in your Removable Drive or PC?
Here are the possible reasons because of which your Disk is suffering from shortcut virus:
- You downloaded an executable (.exe) file from untrusted third-party software which had the virus.
- You connected someone’s malicious USB Stick which spread the virus in your PC from where it entered your USB on connecting it.
- You connected your Removable Drive into someone’s PC which contained the shortcut virus from which it spread over to your drive.

sir my pc attacked in short cut folder virus all solutions is tried but pc on position only worked after shutdown to restart pc the virus is samely in pc. so please help me paremently removed to short cut folder virus
You should first use the command prompt method…then go to my computer and in the search box type “shortcut”. If u find any suspicious shortcut style files like u have a document “project” in docx form and its now showing in shortcut form then delete it(dont delete any useful c drive Files like the “shortcut creating file”)
Then again use the command prompt method to each any every drives as fast as possible and vòilà!
Method #5 was best for my usb.
My NetProtector 2016 removes these viruses without difficulty…even Kaspersky IS 2016 works…
KIS 2016 is unable to do it…
It might say tht the virus is gone but few of the virus files are actually still there
When activating the fixfolder.vbs from method #2 I get an error:
“Permission denied”
Error code: 800A0046

I used my method 5 but it says “Access denied - C: \ xxxx \ xxx”

In my laptop I am usiing Windows7. Most of the time I left click my mouse, it says, “Do you want to delete the Computer icon (or any other file/folder name) from your computer? To restore it later, go to personalization in Control Panel.” Even though I click NO button, it appers again. I have scanned all files & ran a boot-time scan, but no solution till now! Meanwhile I have lost around 23GB memory from my D drive. 🙁
Just right click ok the USB drive go to properties and then Tools run Check now and start your all files will b back it works best

I did most of the above and was able to retrieve my files but drive.bat virus somehow still gets revived even after i format my flashdrives. Also, i bought new flashdrives but they just got infected the moment i inserted them on my laptop.
Am using Dell insp win10 but it keeps on creating un necessary shortcut and on the desktop it created a desktop shortcut and when I put in external HDD and a flash it creates a recyclebin and systems volume information. HOW DO I RESOLVE THAT PROBLEM
